“This will be accompanied by a period of heavy northwesterly rain into the west of the Island, and strong northwesterlies to eastern regions.
“The heaviest rain is expected in Westland south of Otira, Fiordland, and the headwaters of the Otago and Canterbury lakes and rivers, and a Warning is now in force for these areas.
“The watch is for the possibility of rainfall accumulations reaching short duration warning criteria in Westland from Otira northwards and Buller.
“The strongest winds are expected about the Canterbury High Country, and a warning for severe gale northwesterlies is now in force for this area.
“This watch is for the possibility of northwesterlies reaching severe gale in exposed parts of Otago and Southland.
“People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case parts of this watch are upgraded to a full Warning, or other areas are added.”
