Northland Police have today made an arrest in connection with a firearms incident after a man fired shots at a house in the Far North town of Ahipara on Monday.

A 44-year-old Northland man was arrested without incident and charged with assault with a weapon.

However, police have suggested additional charges are likely to be laid.

"He will be appearing in Kaitaia District Court tomorrow," said Detective Sergeant Mark Dalzell of Kaitaia Police.

No-one was hurt in the incident in Takahe Street on Monday morning.

But a nearby school went into lockdown while armed police scoured the small town while the shooter was a large.

An appeal later went out for him to hand himself in.

Detective Sergeant Dalzell said police had already recovered the firearm the man was thought to have used, as well as his car.

He said the shooting incident was the result of a dispute between people who knew one another.
