Drowning in Hawke’s Bay, missing teen in Manawatu

Police are investigating a drowning in Hawke's Bay, while a search is underway for a missing teenager in Manawatu.

One person has drowned at Waimarama Beach in Hawke’s Bay this evening.

Police were called to the beach shortly before 7pm after three people got into difficulty in the water.

"Sadly one of the people died after being recovered from the water," says police.

"Two people have been transported to Hawke’s Bay Hospital in a moderate condition."

Police are investigating the incident,

Meanwhile, a search is under way in the Rangitikei River this evening for a teenage boy reported missing.

Police were notified of the missing boy at 6pm. 

"He had last been seen in the river around 45 minutes earlier, near the bridge where State Highway 1 crosses the river," says police.

"Police and family members are searching for the boy, with the assistance of a local jet boater and  the rescue helicopter.|

At this stage it is anticipated that the search will continue until it gets dark and resume at first light.
