A new generation of bird fanciers made its presence felt at the Ashburton Fanciers’ Society annual show at the weekend.

Sisters Shaylyn Pulley, 6, and Summer Pulley, 7, were busy keeping an eye on their entries in the bantam section as well as their father’s light Sussex rooster.

The birds were among 650 entries at the show, which also featured cavies, rabbits and cats.

Ashburton star of the movie Pecking Order, Brian Glassey, had 50 prize birds in the show.

He was hoping the movie’s success would generate more numbers at the two-day show, held in the Ashburton Sports Hall.

Pecking Order is a fun documentary about the Christchurch Poultry, Bantam and Pigeon Club and gives a unique insight into the world of competitive poultry breeding and showing.

The Pulley sisters could well be the next generation.

Shaylyn won first reserve champion with her white pekin pullet in the children’s bantam section while Summer placed second with her black pekin pullet.
