BOPDHB looks to improve work culture

Bay of Plenty District Health Board is looking to improve its workplace culture following the release of a report which revealed ‘shocking’ findings.

BOPDHB declined to release the full report but the summary, which has been requested under the Official Information Act, but a slide show of the report's findings was fronted.

The slides showed about 95 per cent, of 150 staff who were identified, had only negative or neutral comments about the service.

From the 70 nurses interviewed not one person had anything positive to say about the service.

The workload was identified to be immense with staff saying: "It feels like we're drowning".

Others said they felt unsafe, that there was a punitive work culture and that the accommodation was awful.

The report found there was a "significant amount of stress and distress" among staff and there was a need to rebuild confidence in the leadership team.

BOPDHB Health and Addictions Services clinical director Dr Sue Mackersey also resigned just weeks after the report was released.

A spokesperson for the DHB confirmed Fiona Miller is currently the acting director.

Bay of Plenty DHB, quality and patient safety manager, Debbie Brown says the organisation is finding ways to improve their services.

“We are currently conducting a series of collaborative workshops with our Mental Health and Addiction staff about the evolution of the service moving forward.

“These will continue over the next three to four weeks and their outcome, which will be shared with the teams, will inform the next steps we take.

 “During this process, and any potential future change process, the focus of our compassionate and professional Mental Health and Addiction teams will remain the wellbeing of our patients as it always has.

“Our communities and patients can be assured that the high standards of care they have always received will continue into the future.”
