Heavy rain is being forecast for the South Island for the next two days.
An active front is forecast to move north across the South Island during Friday and Saturday bringing a period of northwesterly rain to western areas.
The heaviest rain is expected in Westland south of Harihari from Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon, and a warning for heavy rain is now in force for this area.

Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous, says the MetService.
