State Highway 1 in Putaruru remains closed this evening following a fatal crash in South Waikato.
Police have confirmed that one person has died after two cars crashed head-on some four kilometres south of Putaruru at 6pm.
The emergency services arrived to find the male driver of one of the cars had died at the
scene, while the male driver of the second car suffered moderate injuries.
He has since been taken to hospital.
The road is likely to remain closed until at least 10.30pm tonight, with diversions in place at Main Street, Princess Street and Lichfield Road.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Senior Sergeant Fane Troy said: “All road deaths are a tragedy and while the investigation is still in the early stages all motorists are reminded to only drive when they are well rested, to avoid distractions and to drive to the conditions.”
Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jaron Phillips earlier told Stuff that there were two cars at the scene, which was being attended by three fire crews from the Putaruru Volunteer Fire Brigade.
